Salthouse Parish Council is a first tier local authority of volunteer councillors representing the 145 electors of the Civil Parish of Salthouse in Norfolk. It exists to hear and represent the opinions and interests of the parish, to organise small-scale local services and activities and to provide a focus for civic life and community identity in our village.

Its activities are regulated by numerous laws and rules, primarily the Local Government Act 1972, and funded by a 'precept' on the residents of the parish (a small additional charge to their Council Tax) and by whatever other sources of funding it can find. For 2010/11 the parish precept for a Band D home is £24.53 per year from a total band D charge of £1,499.63 (of which £1145.07 goes to Norfolk County Council, £191.16 to Norfolk Police Authority and £138.87 to North Norfolk District Council).

Being a Parish Councillor is easy and interesting, it makes a real contribution to community life yet costs nothing apart from a little time and energy. If you are over 18, British or Irish and live or work in or near the parish you are probably eligible and would be very welcome. Please contact the clerk for more information.

At present your Parish Councillors are: Mr Ivan Large (Chairman), Dr Nathaniel Cary, Dr Sarah Dawson, Mr Andrew Gray, Mr Tony Groom, Mr Clifford Large.

Salthouse Parish Council has one paid part-time employee (4 hours per week), the Clerk to the Council, Mr John Stibbons.

The Council meets 8 times a year normally on a Tuesday at 7.30 pm at the British Columbia Hall, Cross Street, Salthouse. Meeting dates for 2010 are: May 4th (with annual parish meeting), June 15th, July 27th, September 7th, October 26th, December 7th. Residents and other members of the public are very welcome at meetings, time is always allocated for informal public questions but any matter to be formally considered by the council must be placed on the agenda beforehand; contact any councillor or the clerk to arrange this. The council's discussions and decisions are recorded in the minutes.

Parish Council notices are published on this website and on two noticeboards, one on the village green by the bus stop, the other on Cross Street outside the British Columbia Hall.

Occasionally meeting dates change due to unforeseen circumstances but an official notice of meeting is always published beforehand on the parish noticeboards, please check this or check with the clerk before attending.

By law all English parishes must hold an Annual Parish Meeting in May. As in most small parishes, ours immediately precedes the May Parish Council meeting. Any parish elector may speak at this meeting.
